Retaining Wall Contractor in Campbell River

Illaheechuck Civil Construction is a retaining wall contractor based in Campbell River. Rock retaining walls

Machine-placed rock walls are the Island's wall. They suit the ground, they suit the look, and built properly they outlast everything around them. Each rock is set individually: seated on a compacted base, battered back into the slope, locked against its neighbours, and chinked, so the wall works as a mass, not a stack. There's no mortar to fail and nothing to rot; a well-built rock wall is still doing its job in fifty years.

We source local basalt and granite, size the rock to the wall height and the load behind it, and build with operators who place rock for a living. Feature walls at the front of a property get the face; retaining walls at the back get the engineering. Both get the drainage.

Lock-block and concrete retaining walls

Where a rock wall isn't the right answer (tight property lines, vehicle surcharge, a wall that has to hold a building or a road) we build lock-block walls and cast-in-place concrete walls to the engineered design.

Lock-block walls go up fast and are ideal for yards, driveways, and commercial sites where a straight, stackable face makes sense. Concrete walls are formed, reinforced, and poured for the loads that demand it: walls under parking, walls beside foundations, walls carrying a road above a lower lot. Our crews already form and pour footings and foundation walls across Campbell River and the Comox Valley, so a concrete retaining wall is the same work in a different place.

Rip-rap, shoreline protection, and slope stabilization

Not every slope needs a wall. Banks, ditches, culvert outlets, and waterfront often need rip-rap, sized angular rock placed on a filter layer to armour the ground against water that would otherwise carry it away. We place rip-rap and armour stone for shoreline protection on Discovery Passage and the Campbell River estuary, for creek and ditch banks, for culvert inlets and outlets, and for the cut and fill slopes on access roads.

For slopes that have started to move (slumping banks, eroding cuts, failing old cribbing) we do slope stabilization: regrading to a stable angle, benching, subsurface drainage, and rock placement, to the geotechnical engineer's recommendations. Work near the ocean, streams, or riparian areas comes with provincial and federal approvals; we've worked through them before, and we build environmental windows and sediment control into the plan rather than discovering them on site.

Drainage: the part that decides whether a wall lasts

A retaining wall is a drainage structure that happens to hold back dirt. Walls in Campbell River almost never fail at the face. They fail from the water behind them, in a winter that drops a metre and a half of rain on saturated glacial till. Hydrostatic pressure pushes, freezes, and pushes again until the wall leans.

So every wall we build gets free-draining granular backfill, drain rock, perforated pipe that daylights somewhere useful, and filter fabric where the design calls for it. Weep holes where they're needed. Surface water directed away from the top of the wall, not into it. This is the work you can't see in the finished photo, and it's the reason our walls stay straight.

Engineered walls, permits, and the rules in Campbell River

In British Columbia, retaining walls over 1.2 metres, walls supporting a surcharge like a driveway or a building, and tiered walls that act together generally need an engineer's design and a permit.
